The horse barreling down the wooden overpass didn't alter my best friend Nikita's determination. Nikita pulled and huffed as we passed the galloping horse, and the old bridge shook and swayed beneath our feet. Nikita is an eighty-pound, Boxer-mix, rescue dog! It was a brisk autumn day, so she was wearing her favorite large dog clothes. She couldn't wait to get to the hot springs. "Nikita! Heel," I said. But this old dog didn't care for new tricks. I unleashed her and the 1980's slow-motion music should have started playing, because she took off lightning fast and it all got trapped in time: her ears perked straight up, her tongue flapped and sloshed, her eyes smiled wider than her mouth, her fangs glistened in the sun, her fur naked without her large dog clothes... and then she was flying. She leaped off the end of the bridge and sailed 25 feet over the crystal clear hot spring. The glassy water mirrored her flight and as she met her reflection water blasted into the air and she disappeared below its surface. She popped up and swam to the shore as the 1980's music stopped in my head. I dried her off and put her large dog clothes back on. She always seemed happier after that dunk. Sometimes I wonder if it was really her that came back, or the glassy reflection from the other side.
