Ah yes, you've probably heard a joke or two about New Jersey over the years. Things like; "It's the world's biggest single slab of concrete!" Maybe there was one in reference to it being the "Garden State" like; "The only reason we named it the Garden State is because Petrochemical Refinery State wouldn't fit on the license plates!" Then of course everyone saying "Joysee" instead of "Jersey" just brings about all kinds of other remarks. In fact, we would venture to say that those who make the remarks have never been to New Jersey. Yes, it's the 3rd smallest state in the country, but if you want to be technical there are two states within it. You either live in North Jersey or South Jersey. In the good old days it used to be the East and West.Northerners are the individuals who do say they live in New Joysee, but those in the south say they live in South Jersey. It's quite interesting, and if you're wondering what constitutes South Jersey it's the territory that is below Trenton (which is the capitol. You will also find that the southerners talk faster and sound like they live in Virginia. If you need to understand the statistics, New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the country. Keep in mind though that North Jersey is considered the "New York City Southern Extension," and the bases for what we know of the Mafia today. It's also where you will find a plethora of paved over concrete, as well as petrochemical refineries. If you love the bright lights of the city night life, or if you want to work in the chemical or financial industries, North Jersey is the place to be for you. You'll quickly and easily get to New York as well as the famous Jersey Shore points of that part of the state. But if you prefer picturesque Victorian and pre-Victorian architecture, small towns, meadows, fields, rolled up bales of hay, keeping a garden, farming, horseback riding, and the quiet life, South Jersey is perfect for you.If you really want to know why it's called the Garden State then you have to travel south. Here is where you will find all the farmland and forests, as well as plenty of gardens. They grow everything from tomatoes, cranberries and blueberries to raspberries, strawberries, corn, asparagus and cucumbers. Then of course if you love wine you can partake in your own vineyard adventure and experience Vineland. This is where the Welch's Grape Juice originated from years ago. It's also the biggest city in New Jersey.Even if you want to live with a little southern hospitality and still need the city life, you can always head to Philadelphia. You will be able to cheer for their sports teams, jump on the Expressway, or even head to Atlantic City in a short period of time. You're also only about 2 hours away from Baltimore and 3 hours from D.C. During the warm weather period we also recommend heading to the Wildwood pub district and walk along the "down the Shore" boardwalk.Another thing to consider is the weather. Those who love the snow will be more inclined to visit North Jersey, but you also don't have to worry about hurricanes and tornadoes either. So you can see that New Jersey is a lot more than just a slab of concrete and people saying "Joy-see." It's very diverse and the next time you're looking for a place to visit, we recommend coming through the Garden State.
